I have the Microsoft Vista operating system.  The Beyond Belief, Vault of Heaven, and Psyche screen savers don't install properly. What's up?

Windows Vista Users --
To install the Beyond Belief, Vault of Heaven or Psyche screensavers:

1. Click the download link, then choose "Save" instead of "Run".
2. After the EXE has downloaded, find the EXE file.
3. Click the EXE file with your right mouse button, then choose "Run as administrator".
It should then install and run just fine.

Why does it take so long to download the screen savers?

There are three reasons. First, when the screen savers are announced, several thousand people attempt to download screen savers in a very short period of time. The servers get pissed off and go on strike. Second, the files are quite large. Third, you may be on a dial-up line. Bummer!

How can I get the downloads faster?

Either wait a couple of days for the rush to subside, or try to do the download in the wee hours of the morning.

Do I need 1of2 and 2of2 (etc.) to make the screen savers work?

No. The "x of something" screen savers (called splits) are simply small portions of the larger screen savers. They all operate independently. If you have a really awesome computer, you can run 1of1. If you have a really crappy computer (and maybe even a dial-up line) you may want to run the splits (e.g. 2of5 or 1of2, etc.), and just switch around from time to time.

Why do I have to send the CDs via snail mail? (Submitting photographers only)
Reviewing thousands of photos via the web is an extremely laborious and time consuming effort. Also, by sending in a CD, you are giving explicit permission for your photos to be used in the Burning Man Screen Saver Project.

Are the files safe and secure?

The files that are downloadable from this site have been assembled using a commercially available program called iScreensaver. These files are safe to install on your computer. If you've received copies of our screen savers from alternate sources, we cannot vouch for their reliability.

What's the difference between PG and R versions?

PG versions of the screens savers have no discernable nudity, sexual innuendo, etc. R versions are simply the PG versions with additional content that does have nudity, sexual innuendo, etc. There is no nudity for the sake of nudity or exploitation. R versions contain material that might be inappropriate for some home or office environments.

After I install the screen saver, the colors are funky. (Windows)

Right click on the Desktop. Click Properties. Click the Settings tab. Under Colors, select True Color (32-bit). Click Apply.

After installing the screen saver, the screen goes blank/black and I never see a screen saver. (Windows)

Go into Control Panel. Open Power Management. Adjust the timing so that your computer doesn't 'power down' in an inordinate short period of time.

Also, reduce the amount of time before the screen saver kicks in. (Right click Desktop. Click Properties. Click Screen Saver. Adjust the wait time.)

If you're using a Windows laptop, your machine turns off the screen after a predetermined amount of time unless you are using your A/C adaptor.

You get an 'Exception Fault' after clicking to download the screen savers.

Public Preview #3 of QuickTime for Windows reportedly fixes this problem.

This is an issue more between QuickTime, your operating system and iScreensaver; and we're not smart enough to know any more than:

The screen savers require QuickTime v6.0, or higher. Try downloading the latest version of QuickTime.

How can I capture a single image from the screen savers?

You can't unless you happen to be watching, waiting and are ready to hit your 'Print Screen' button when the photo comes up. That sort of works on PCs. On Macs, we have no idea if this is possible.
